Editor's Note: Flattering50 was recently invited to review Wrapurse, a new product that protects the bottom of a woman's handbag. The following is that review.

How many times have you hesitated to put your good handbag down somewhere--a public floor or a park bench, for instance? Too many times to count? Since I was first contacted by the folks at WraPurse, I've been amazed how many times I found myself saying: "Do you really want to put your purse there?" In just the past week, I've avoided putting my handbag on a public bathroom floor, when the stall had no hook; a movie theater floor, sticky with soda and popcorn butter; and the stadium floor at a summer concert. In the past, my only solution in those situation was to keep the purse in my lap or on my shoulder--not great options. With WraPurse, a convenient, protective covering for the bottom of a handbag (see photo above), I can put a purse on most surfaces without fear of ruining it.

Right now, WraPurse creator Cyndi Heap is running a campaign to generate funding so she can establish her product's brand as well as give back to a worthy cause.
INCREASE YOUR HANDBAG'S LONGEVITY
Cyndi Heap, the mother of two active boys, got the idea for WraPurse after ruining good handbags on soccer fields and dirty sports bleachers. The WraPurse, which is reusable, slides over the bottom of a handbag or tote and is secured with a drawstring. It comes in different sizes for a secure fit on most handbags and is available in three colors--chestnut, merlot and midnight black.

I only have a few really expensive handbags, but one is Gucci and its white. The purse is not new, but is in pretty good condition. The reason: Over the years, I've been very careful about where I take and where I put it down. I'm excited about WraPurse because it gives me peace of mind when I'm out and about with a handbag, especially an expensive one.

Using the site's size chart, I ordered a medium size WraPurse in chestnut brown (below). Most of my handbags are medium size, so I chose a WraPurse size I could use with all of them.

Wrapurse is designed to be used again and again. However, because it's made with a water-resistant material, it shouldn't be machine washed or even hand washed. After using my WraPurse, I wiped it down with a clean rag. Once dried, I returned it to its travel pouch.

The product is lightweight and compact, so it's no trouble to carry it in a handbag. It's also reasonable priced ($16-22, depending on the size) and can be purchased online at WraPurse.
CAMPAIGN PLANS TO GIVE BACK
What's better than giving back? Cyndi is currently running an Indiegogo campaign for WraPurse. Indiegogo is a website that helps people raise funds for creative, independent projects. You can become a backer of Cyndi's campaign by pledging money or simply posting the project's link online and on social media. In addition to using the funds to establish the WraPurse brand, Cyndi is planning to give a portion to charity. Cyndi, who has a son with special needs, plans to donate 10% of the funds raised to Understood.org, one of the programs at the National Center for Learning Disabilities.

Recently, the folks at 10DollarMail contacted me and invited me to experience their website, which specializes in low-cost apparel, shoes, jewelry and accessories for women. In fact, everything on the site is priced at $9.99 or less. I was intrigued and wondered: Is it possible to get good quality fashions at such a low price? After a perusal of the site's merchandise, which includes Plus sizes, I accepted the invitation to review the shopping site.

To experience the website, I order the Woven Straw Camel Bohemian Shoulder Bag, using a $9.99 gift certificate provided by 10DollarMail. In the summertime, I like to carry a straw bag on the weekends; straw is a casual and fun look. Plus, a big straw bag is handy for shopping,
especially at the farms on Long Island's North Fork. To test out the 10DollarMail straw bag, I carried it on a recent trip to Lavender by the Sea, a lavender farm in East Marion (see photos).

A LOW-COST BAG THAT HOLDS UP
I'm constantly encouraging Flattering50 readers to avoid buying lots and lots of low-cost garments and accessories, and instead, spending a little more on a few more expensive, better-quality pieces. However, I also believe the over 50 woman can stretch her fashion budget by mixing in a low-cost item of good quality when styling an outfit. The key, of course, is the quality of the low-cost item.

According to its website, 10DollarMail is able to offer good quality, low-cost apparel and accessories because of its unique business model, which allows the site to purchase limited quantities of overstock inventory at heavily discounted prices. By cutting out wholesalers and distributors, the site says it can pass on great deals to customers. However, the proof, as they say, is in the pudding. I couldn't wait to see what the straw bag I ordered actually looked like up close.

My initial reaction after removing the straw bag from the shipping material was amazement. I was honestly amazed by the low-cost bag's quality. It is fully lined and has a small pocket (perfect for holding my cell phone) and a magnetic closure. Still, I wondered: How would it hold up when used?

Yesterday, I used my new straw bag on a trip to the lavender farm. It's impossible to visit the farm without stocking up on its many lavender-based products for myself and for gifts. I'm happy to report that the straw bag held up beautifully under the weight of jars of honey, soaps, and tins of hand balm.

Unfortunately, I can't share the link to my straw bag. It's no longer available. Again, the site keeps prices low by offering limited quantities and continually adding new merchandise. I also can't speak to the quality of all the apparel and accessories on the site. However, I am very pleased with my straw bag. In fact, I'm planning to buy the Tiny Leaves Pajama Bottoms for $9.99 next.

Naturally, quality is super important when shopping. However, a shopping site's functionality is also very important to me. The 10DollarMail site is very responsive, making it quick and easy to look through the collection. Plus, when ordering, the site accepts PayPal as well as major credit cards. And the ordering process is handled on secure webpages. For all these reason, I believe 10DollarMail is a site worth checking out.

It's snowing--again! Oh, well, at least yesterday was sunny and bright. I asked my husband to snap the photo above to show my latest fashion pick for chasing the winter blues away: a spring handbag. After weeks of frigid temps and every-other-day snowfalls, I decided to bag my winter black handbags and start using a honey-colored spring handbag. And strange though it may sound, it's definitely picked up my spirits. It's a little like seeing those cheery crocuses popping out, which sometimes happens around this time of year--but not this year! So in lieu of crocuses, I recommend (if you haven't already) pulling out a spring-y something, like a handbag or shoes. Stay warm!

I thought you might enjoy this snow creature (a caterpillar, perhaps?) with its stylish red bandana and gloves...

There are certain prints I can't imagine ever banning from my wardrobe. Houndstooth is one of them. I was a teenager when I wore my first houndstooth print garment--a jumper. Suffice it to say, there have been many, many tops, skirts, scarves and more in the favorite print since then. Houndstooth is simple, classic and easy to style, which makes it a great look for women over 50. Scroll down for a sample of houndstooth print fashions and accessories.

Most of my houndstooth prints have been combinations of neutral colors: black and white, black and grey, or black and brown. (Okay, there was once a black and hot pink houndstooth print top in my closet.) When it's time to get dressed, I just grab a top or bottom in one of the houndstooth print's colors and I've got my outfit. This weekend, my husband and I went out for lunch at our favorite Indian restaurant. I love mixing textures, so I grabbed a black lace top to wear with my newest wool-knit houndstooth skirt and black tall boots.

FOR FANS OF HOUNDSTOOTH
You'll find a wide assortment of garments and accessories made with a houndstooth print online. Sometimes the print is petite and other times it's huge. There are houndstooth coats, capes, boots, handbags and even iPhone cases. If you'd like to add a little houndstooth to your wardrobe, take a peek at what's online...
Robin is the winner of the most recent Flattering50 giveaway and is wearing the pretty necklace she chose from the Boyer New York collection. "I'm thrilled with it!" Robin wrote in a recent email. "It goes with everything--a little black dress and a tee shirt."

Robin said she enjoyed working with Lisa Harris, designer and creative spirit at Boyer New York. "I had a hard time choosing a necklace and wrote Lisa several times," she explained. "I finally narrowed it down to five pieces and Lisa answered my questions about those."

In the end, Robin picked the Silver Tube and Jumbo Pearl Necklace, a piece with her birthstone. The necklace features a single large 30mm pearl. "I love it," she wrote. "It's my new favorite necklace. Lisa's collection is beautiful and the craftsmanship is stunning."
Robin said she plans to "debut" her new beautiful necklace at an upcoming wedding. "I am excited!" And I'm excited for Robin. Her new necklace looks lovely on her!
What better way to celebrate fall than with a new piece of jewelry? Lisa Harris, design director and brand enthusiast at Boyer New York, would like to let one Flattering50 reader select one or more unique pieces of costume jewelry (total value up to $150) from her collection. For example, I'm wearing a Turquoise Glass Necklace ($140) from the collection. Scroll down to learn more about Lisa, Boyer New York, and how you can enter for a chance to win costume jewelry of your choice.

DESIGNING WOMAN
Boyer New York has been specializing in unique costume jewelry--necklaces, bracelets, clip-on earrings and bridal pieces--since the 1970s. Five years ago, after moving her family to New York, Lisa Harris took over the company when the owner retired. "I jumped in head first," she says.

Lisa's previous experience includes earning a BFA in Interior Design, and running a graphic design/marketing communications firm with my husband while raising a family. "In the past, I took jewelry design classes for fun and loved them. My Mom had a business selling costume jewelry, too. I think the love I have for jewelry is in my blood."

Today, Lisa designs most of the pieces for Boyer New York. "There are a few pieces, some clip earring styles, for example, that are legacy styles from the collection before I took over," she says. "Boyer New York is known for its line of high-quality plated clip earrings."

When asked to describe the jewelry collection, Lisa says it's "a mixture of classic styles and statement pieces, with a bold look." She adds, "I'm not a big fan of dainty costume jewelry. If you're going to wear costume jewelry, let everyone see it!"

JEWELRY FOR OVER 50 WOMEN
According to Lisa, the jewelry is made with the over 50 woman in mind. For example, the bolder necklace designs tend to "hide trouble spots on the neck," she says. Many of the necklaces come with magnet clasps, "making them easy to put on and take off." In addition, the clip-on earrings are designed to "cover up earlobes and beautifully frame a woman's face."

I noticed that many of the pieces in the Boyer collection feature faux pearls. "I do a lot of designing with pearls," says Lisa, "because they are so versatile. They can be worn with jeans or a Little Black Dress."

Lisa sent me a lovely turquoise glass necklace (top of the post and below). The splash of color is great for someone like me, whose style tends to rely heavily on neutral colors--black, white and grey. I'm also a big fan of necklaces with multiple strands. And the glass beads catch the light, giving off a very pretty sparkle. This is a versatile piece that I'll be able to wear with a top and skirt to work, or with jeans for a casual dinner out on the weekend. While I don't have arthritis or any other condition that limits my movement, my eyes aren't what they once were. As a result, I really appreciate the necklace's attractive hook closer. It's much easier to see and manipulate than, say, a tiny claw closure.

The folks at Anjolee, the Art of Jewelry would like to give one Flattering50 reader a Topaz Solitaire Pendant Necklace (above) from their collection of lovely diamond and gemstone jewelry. The 5mm topaz gemstone is set in a simple, yet sophisticated four-prong design with an 18-inch silver chain. The topaz’s icy blue color is on trend with this spring’s love affair with all things blue. The delicate necklace, which can be dressed up or down, will add spring sparkle to whatever you're wearing. And...it's the perfect piece for summer days and nights, when sizzling heat precludes the wearing of heavy jewelry. To learn more about Anjolee and this necklace giveaway, see below.
ABOUT ANJOLEE
The Anjolee website features a very large selection of jewelry designs, including diamond bridal sets, anniversary rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces and pendants. In addition, there are gemstone pieces, like the Topaz Solitaire Pendant Necklace (above and below). Shoppers can customize a piece of jewelry, choosing the size and cut of the diamond and the metal used for the setting. They can also choose from a nice selection of gemstones, available in different sizes. So many choices!

While the collection is extensive, I find the website super easy to navigate. I particularly love the opportunity to view each piece in 3D. It goes without saying that a wedding or anniversary ring is a very special piece. It's really helpful to see the piece from every angle in 3D.

I'm sitting at my desk watching the most recent snowfall (7 inches so far!) and thinking: What a funny time of year it is! Everywhere I look, people are bundled up, trying to stay warm. And, yet, in the past week, I've received several clothing catalogs, filled with bright-colored spring dresses and tops, and even the latest swimsuit collections. Meanwhile, New York Fashion Week, which will showcase fashion designs for fall 2014, is just a few days away. My head is spinning. Should I write about what's on the street, what's in the catalogs or what's on the runway? Well, my tendency is to report what I'm seeing on the New York City streets. And that's fur, fur, FUR!

FUR-BRUARY
A couple of posts ago, I showed a fabulous DIY faux fur tote created by a Flattering50 reader and shared a few link to DIY faux fur handbag projects. I guess because fur is on my brain, I've also noticed some well-priced faux fur bags available. Take, for instance, this
Juicy Couture Hollywood Hills Faux Fur Clutch ($128) (below)...

And there are several Adriene Landau faux fur bags for under $130 at Neiman Marcus Last Call.
This one is more hairy than furry, but I love the two leopard patterns. You can reverse the pattern when the mood strikes you.

In December, Cyndee, a Flattering50 reader from Virginia, emailed me about a faux fur tote she was making. I love faux fur accessories—hats, handbags, gloves, shoes and so on! I wrote back, asking her to send me a photo of the finished tote. Not only did she send me a photo (above), but she said I could share it with you. Isn’t it fabulous? Cyndee used faux snow leopard fur fabric and faux suede for the straps. “I am having fun wearing my snow leopard faux fur bag,” Cyndee writes. “It’s a casual bag, but I could see using this type of fabric for a smaller, evening purse.”

FAUX-BULOUS FUR
I love the “maker movement” . Today, millions of people are embracing their inner DIY (do it yourself) and creating fabulous things. Some people have reinvented themselves as entrepreneurs, selling their creations on e-marketplaces (such as Etsy). Others have started websites with step-by-step directions and videos for their DIY projects. And still others, like Cyndee, have hopped on the DIY wagon to create something lovely for themselves, or, like me, welcome the chance to purchase the unique, home-crafted products of other DIY artisans. A recent Forbes magazine article suggests that the maker movement is reinventing today’s retail industry.

For her faux fur tote, Cyndee found directions at Sew4Home. According to Cyndee, sewing faux fur was a bit of a challenge. "It was my first adventure in sewing this type of fabric. But Sew4Home
had complete instructions as they do with all their great projects."

Meanwhile, I poked around the Internet and found directions for another basic fur tote.

For those of you with some DIY handbag experience, you might want to check out How Did You Make. The site has two fur bags: a fur purse and a fur and petal handbag. The latter purse would be perfect for a special evening on Valentine’s Day, don’t you think?

Or perhaps, like me, you’ve never made your own handbag. I was thinking I might test the waters, so to speak, with something much less complicated. Here’s a faux fur wine sack that I’m ga-ga about. Talk about making a statement a hostess gift!

Take a peek at the DIY handbags created from re-purposed household items (ie, placemats, shirts, floppy disk, book cover, and calendar dish cloth) on this Pinterest page. Some people are so creative!

WHAT'S YOUR LATEST DIY FASHION STATEMENT?
Have you created a DIY garment or accessory for yourself? I would love to know about it. Send me a photo of your creation and the DIY website that inspired you. I'd love to share both with Flattering50 readers.
Thanks!

I feel fortunate to have some wonderful women in my life, including two sisters, two nieces, my son’s girlfriend, several close work colleagues and some pretty special girlfriends. Naturally, I’m looking for special holiday gifts to show how much I appreciate them. I’ve been poking around the web since early November, looking for inspiration. The first gift idea I considered was a scarf. I know, I know--not the most original gift. Still, a scarf is a great wardrobe pick-me-up. During my online search, I came across a
Diane von Furstenberg Braden Scarf (was $185, now $92.50) (above) at shopbop.com. A DVF scarf for under $100? Who knew? I got pretty excited and started looking elsewhere. And guess what? I found other designer scarves for under $100.

SCARF SEARCH

I love to give (and receive!) a scarf for a bunch of reasons: 1) you don't have to worry about sizing, 2) scarves aren't age-specific (they flattering women of all ages) and 3) the more scarves a woman has the merrier. And if the scarf is from a designer's collection, all the better. There is nothing like a designer scarf in a lux fabric to make a woman over 50 feel like a million bucks.

In my search for designer scarves under $100, I found a number of choices on the "on sale" pages at shopbop.com as well as Nordstroms, where you can Save up to 60% at NORDSTROM. From top brands to bestsellers, shop great styles for the whole family.. I also stopped the DKNY site and found a fabulous faux fur scarf that was not on sale, but still $100. For this post, I've included a few of the scarves I found. If you click on either text links or the photos for Nordstrom or Shopbop, you'll find even more designer scarves under $100.
This over 50 style watcher gets a kick out finding scarves for sale in unexpected places. It's not surprising, considering what a "hot trend" scarves are these days. Still, it makes me laugh. Recently, my husband and I stopped by a vineyard (below) on the North Fork of Long Island, the East Coast's wine country, and found lovely French-import scarves for sale. Needless to say, my husband and I came for the rosé, but I left with two new scarves.

SCARF SEASON
Since turning 50, scarf season has become nearly year-round for me. In younger years, I wrapped my neck (and sometimes my face!) in a wooly scarf on bitterly cold winter days. But I never dreamt of wearing a scarf any other time. Scarves were something my mother's generation wore on their heads to protect their coifs. These days, however, I love the pop of color and neck coverage that scarves offer. And scarves know no age limit. I never think: Am I too old to wear a scarf?

Scarves can be
styled in endless ways, creating a variety of looks for an outfit. I
love my new blue and white scarf (at top and above) with my black biker
jacket and polka dot skirt. Remember the film, The English Patient?
Early on, there's a scene in which Kristin Scott Thomas's character and a
group of men are sharing stories around a campfire in the desert. To
keep warm, she drapes a wide scarf over her leather jacket. I love that
look! Then again, I also like to wear a scarf wrapped snugly around my
neck.

I also bought a narrow olive-colored scarf (below) with multiple textures at the vineyard's La Boutique. The scarf has lace and sheer panels as well as crocheted disks and fringe along the edge. It's very whimsical and makes me laugh.
SCARF SOURCES
Have you found scarves for sale in some place unexpected? Any day now, I expect to see them at the car wash or the post office. For now, you'll find them at most women's clothing brand sites. Here's a couple of other scarves I love...

By the by, in case you're planning a trip to the North Fork, the vineyard's name is Croteaux Vineyards and the rosés are delicious. The place has a great tucked away, rustic atmosphere. It was a gorgeous fall day and we sat outside in the courtyard. While we sipped our wine, we heard the gentle tingle of wind chimes. It turned out, they were wine chimes (below).
Editor's Note: Before I begin this post, I just want to say, "Congratulations!" to Wilma, the winner of Flattering50's Giveaway of a pair of Shaune Bazner clip-on earrings. Enjoy!

I'm not a gal with a bottomless wardrobe or an unlimited clothes allowance, so to keep my "New Day/New Outfit" Project rolling along, I often have to rely on an accessory or two to create my "new outfit." Recently, I picked up a straw bag (above) at an estate sale. I almost felt guilty buying it. "How could anyone let such a fab bag go?"

Last Saturday, my husband snapped this photo of me by the railroad station in Mattituck on Long Island's North Fork. I thought my straw bag would look great with a weathered farm building in the background. (I love weathered farm buildings!) We were on our way to lunch at the Love Lane Kitchen. (By the by, if you're ever on Long Island, the North Fork is a picturesque destination with charming towns and hamlets, vineyards and farms. Unlike the South Fork, where you'll find those tony Hamptons, the North Fork is laid back and unpretentious. But I digress.)

NOT YOUR "NOSE TO THE GRIND" HANDBAG
I love my new straw bag's shape--round and slender. It's the antithesis of
the working gal's smart leather handbag, making it the perfect bag for a lovely, blue sky weekend.

My "New Day/New Outfit" also includes a black and off-white paisley long skirt (old Ann Taylor) and an ultra-thin 3/4 T (new GAP) over a black camisole. (Note to self: Slits in long skirts make it easy to move around, but tend to flap a lot when it's breezy. A pulled-back hairdo is equally challenged in the wind. Sigh.) I made my husband take a side view, so the big old band-aide on the side of my face wouldn't show. (I'll share a little about that episode in my next post.)

In the not-so-distant past, I never would have worn a white T with an off-white and black skirt. I was raised in an era when the fashion ideal was head-to-toe coordination. Everything--top, bottom, purse, shoes, even jewelry--had to match. But these days, I'm all about a little unbalance in my attire. Nothing radical, mind you, just a little mismatching of colors, textures, and/or patterns. In my mind, it adds a bit of interest and edge. It's both energizing and youthful.

Are you drawn to straw handbags?

STRAW BAG BUYS
Looking for a straw bag to complete your "relaxing summer weekend" look? There's a straw bag for just about every woman's taste and purpose. For instance, for the woman over 50 planning a picnic at the Botanical Gardens, there's the classic
Nine West Have A Picnic Mini Lady Handbag ($59)

[Original image unavailable: Nine West Have A Picnic Mini Lady Handbag]

Or for lunch with the girlfriends, there are sweet straw clutches, like this
Tory Burch Chunky Straw Clutch ($195)

Not surprisingly, there are tons of straw stripes with a range of price tags. Some will take you back the free-spirit peasant style of the 1960s, while others are quite modern in their styling. Here are a few examples...

Straw bags are like jeans and thong sandals: it's hard to imagine them ever go out of style. So… investing in a straw bag is likely to pay off with many years of enjoyment. This Large Embroidered Straw Tote (was $398, now $199.99) is crafted in jute and nylon straw with calfskin trim. I love the unusual design and black and natural straw color combination.

Editor's Note: This Giveaway has ended. A new giveaway will be launching shortly.

“Earrings are like orgasms—you can never have too many.” Can you guess who said that? That naughty, but oh-so-witty Nora Ephron—of course. And as usual, I completely agree! I couldn’t begin to estimate how many pairs of earrings I’ve collected over the past 30 years. Still, I love them—one and all. Earrings tend to be a little accessory, but, personally, they speak volumes about my mood of the moment. Each day, I choose a pair that reflects the way I’m feeling—whimsical, demure, retro, urbane, Earthy, cosmopolitan, to name a few. I’ve got a pair (or three!) for all my moods.

So...when the folks representing jewelry artist Shaune Bazner asked if I’d like to choose a pair of clip-on earrings to review for Flattering50, my answer was simple: “Yes, please!” And then, when they asked if I'd I like to offer a Flattering50 reader a pair of clip-on earrings of her choice, I said, "Of course!"

BRIGHT, TEXTURED BEADS
A few days ago, I received the pair of earrings I requested (photo above and below) and I’m happy to report I loved them instantly. To begin with, I love the unusual beads. The top is a fire-polished crystal. I don’t know if you can tell from the photo, but the bead has bursts of light in it. And the bottom bead is textured. The clip's metal disc is made of jeweler’s metal, which is nickel- and lead-free. All the Shaune Bazner jewelry is plated in sterling silver or 22 kt gold, I’m told. Besides being a good-looking piece, I love, love the fact that all of the company’s jewelry is handcrafted right here—in America.

While receiving a lovely pair of earrings is always a treat, they must be comfortable as well as pretty. If anyone can put a clip-on earring to the comfort test, it’s me. Suffice it to say, my earlobes aren't, well, diminutive. And yet, these earrings are extremely comfortable on my earlobes, thanks in part to tiny built-in soft cushions on the clip. I predict my Shaune Bazner clip-on earrings and I are going to have a wonderful future. They'll suit my "Earthy" mood perfectly, don't you think?

Shaune Bazner also designs pierced earrings as well as necklaces, hair sticks, shawl pins and more. To view her entire collection, visit her website.
Over the weekend, I had brunch with a long-time friend. She’d moved away from New York City several years, but was back in the area making a presentation at a quilters’ conference. My friend, Susan Faeder, has an expertise in Japanese fabrics and leads shopping/cultural tours of Japan. I admired the necklace (above) she was wearing when we met. She told me it was a handmade Japanese Vintage Kimono Silk necklace. She’d fallen in love with the necklace during a recent trip to Japan and brought a bunch of the necklaces in different color schemes back home to sell online. With the holidays nearing, I thought the unique necklace would make a nice gift. Click “read more” to learn more about this necklace.
VINTAGE ELEGANCE
Since our brunch, I’ve exchanged emails with my friend to learn more about her kimono necklace. According to Susan, each disk, roughly ¾”-1” diameter, is covered with vintage silk from a Japanese kimono.

The necklace has a knotted closure that slides, allowing you to fit it over your head and create the length that is best for your garment or the occasion. It measures about 22" from one side of the back knot to the other. “I love that is doesn’t jangle and there are no metal parts to catch on my clothing,” writes Susan.

Susan also loves the silk necklace’s versatility. “I can wear it to work with a silk blouse or a turtleneck sweater or when I’m going out at night,” she explains. “It is as light as a feather, easy to pack for trips, and extremely elegant in its simplicity.”

These imported necklaces are available for $59.00 plus $6.00 S/H. Susan can accept MC/Visa. There’s a choice of colors and patterns. For color schemes/patterns, more necklace images and other details, contact Susan at Susan@QEJAPAN.com. The supply is limited. (Though Susan may order more, if there’s an interest.)

There are few things more rewarding in life than having a business that reflects a lifelong passion or dream. Jewelry designer Linda Hollen knows this first hand. She began learning to make jewelry when she was a child. According to her website, Linda's grandmother taught her. That experience turned into a passion. For years, Linda gave her beautiful creations to friends and family. Eventually, they convinced her to share her pieces with the world and LJ’s Distractions, Linda’s jewelry design business, was started. Today, with over 30 years of experience, Linda has created a wonderful collection of unique necklaces, earrings and bracelets. To learn more about Linda’s jewelry, click “Read More” below…

DIVERSE DISTRACTIONS

“I create jewelry using mostly silk ribbon, silver, and art glass beads,” wrote Linda in a recent email. When I read that I thought I would find a collection of similar-looking designs on her website. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Linda's designs are very diverse in color, weight and texture. Just look at the two pieces she sent for this post and I think you'll know what I mean. Linda uses only high quality beads and gemstones, which she collects from around the world. All the beaded jewelry is handcrafted; nothing is mass produced. As a result, her pieces are rarely identical.
Editor’s note: In October, I invited artists specializing in fashion and accessory design to contact me. With the holiday season approaching, I thought it would be nice to share some creative gift ideas with Flattering50 readers. Over the next few Wednesdays, I'll feature one of the artists who responded to my invitation. I hope you'll visit these artists’ websites to view more of their lovely creations.

If Caprilicious Jewellery sounds familiar, it might be because I featured Neena and her jewelry in a post entitled Statement Necklaces From Across the Pond last April. Neena is a doctor and passionate jewelry designer living in the United Kingdom (hence, the British spelling of jewelry). She creates jewelry from a wide range of materials, such as gemstones, beads, crystals, wire, and clays. Her collection of moderately-priced pieces includes statement necklaces, earrings, bracelets, pendants, hair combs, and more. To continue reading, click "Read More" below...
JEWELRY INDIVIDUALIZED

Caprilicious Jewellery is celebrating its first anniversary this month. In a recent email, Neena wrote that her first year
was "very busy and exciting." Her jewelry designs were featured
in a few jewelry maker magazines as well as in the reader’s gallery at
FireMountain Gems, a USA wholesaler of beads and components. In addition, her website is bursting with beautiful hand-crafted designs. She encourages shoppers to contact her about pieces on the website as well as special orders.

In this global age, it should come as no surprise that Neena's clients includes American online shoppers. While the prices for her jewelry are listed in British pounds on her website, PayPal will take care of pounds-to-dollar conversions for shoppers in the USA. (Right now a British pound equals $1.60 in US dollars.)

Since I last blogged about Caprilicious Jewellry, Neena has started using silver, precious metal clay, polymer clay and
enamel work. “Wire jewelry is still my favorite genre,” writes Neena.
“No two pieces look alike. Also, people don’t make too many pieces with
wire, since it’s so labor intensive.” You can see all her designs on the Caprilicious Jewellery website. I think you'll be awed by the variety--I was!

Since writing my post titled Scarf Season: Are You Ready to Wrap?, I discovered a few scarf tying video clips from Eileen Fisher. While some of the tying techniques are repeats of those I posted earlier, there are new ones. And, besides, I actually like seeing some of the techniques repeated. Here's one...

Original embedded media (historical link)

Click "read more" below to continue.

TWISTED SISTER

My favorite way to style a scarf is to layer it with a cardigan or jacket. A small scarf can look fabulous with just a simple top--like a crew neck or V-neck. But a larger scarf (below) layered with a cardigan or jacket is so cozy. Here I am in Monfort, France, on vacation, looking very relaxed, don't you think? While I do like to twist and tie a scarf to create different looks, there are times when I'm just as happy to wrap the scarf around my neck a couple of times and leave it at that.

I also love a wide scarf because I can throw it in my handbag and pull it out if the air or air conditioning is a little chilly. Just having something over my shoulders (below) makes a big different in my comfort level. And, yes, I love the arm-covering benefit.

WHERE TO SHOP
These days, you'll find scarves just about everywhere--including in drug stores! Here's one from Jones New York and below it, an Old Navy Scarf.

[Original image unavailable: Jones New York Patchwork Scarf - Size , Blue]

Finally, here's another scarf tying lesson with the same Eileen Fisher model. Many of the techniques are similar to the first video, but there are a few new ones as well.

Since turning 50, she said she's playing a lot more with color and prints in her accessories, while keeping her tops and bottoms in solids or simple prints (polka dots, stripes). "I no longer wear busy-looking clothes," she explained. "I want to look like I'm wearing the clothes, not like the clothes are wearing me!" An accessory with a mix of color and/or a pattern can add a little "pop" to a outfit in neutral or muted hues. It's also likely to put a smile on your face. For a few other examples of bags with a mix of colors and/or prints, click "read more" below...
