Shopping the Sales: The 3 C's

The semi-annual sales or summer clearance sales may be almost over, but there are still bargains to be found. I wasn't able to shop the sales till this past week and was pleased to find there are still a lot on sale in stores and online. Needless the sale, shopping at the end of the sales season has its advantages and disadvantages. The Disadvantage: You may not find a lot of things in your size. The Advantage: The clothing companies really want to unload their inventory and keep slashing prices. For example, this week, I bought a jean skirt and textured sweater at Gap for less than $20.

As a frugal shopper, I like to have a strategy when shopping the semi-annual or clearance sales. Without a plan, it's easy to be overwhelmed by the racks and racks of garments at reduced prices. While I may find a little something to wear right now (a midsummer pick-me-up), my real goal when shopping the summer sales is to get a head start on fall shopping. To shop for fall pieces now, I follow the 3 C's. That is I look for garments and accessories that are:
Chic
Color trendy
Classic

SHOPPING WITH A PURPOSE
Right now, you'll find sales at most of the major clothing brands and department stores. (For links to current sales, take a peek HERE.) While the sales may cool down after that, they'll be back again over Labor Day Weekend and Columbus Day Weekend. Here's what I look for when shopping...

Chic
To shop the summer sales for clothing and accessories I'll wear in the fall, I like to know what the fall trends are going to be--what will be chic or trending. Since the telephone book-size September issues of the fashion magazines aren't out in July, I look for fall preview articles on online and at the newsstand. Obviously, not all the trends are going to suit my taste and comfort level. Also, most of the trends are for cold weather clothing (ie, fur trim), which, obviously, aren't on sale or even available yet. However, I like to have a few summer-to-fall transition pieces in mind when I shop. For my recent shopping trip, my wish list included textured garments and dark floral prints. I found a texture sweater that I know will be a staple this fall.

Other fall 2015 trends:

Nouveau Victorian (ie, high collars, lace blouses, ruffles)

Separates with a mix of prints (ie, stripes and plaids)

70s Bohemian (leftover from last year)

Unexpected color combinations

Fur trim

21st Century Mod

Tops and bottoms in the same color scheme

Color-trendy
For every season, there are a handful of hip colors. Beginning last spring, however, color--lots of color--has dominated the style consciousness. The same is predicted for this fall. Since turning 50, I have become color-challenged, relying heavily on neutral and muted hues. (I wrote a post about my desire to break away from a reliance on neutral.) For my recent shopping trip, I looked for pieces in fall's trendy colors. I didn't find a Marsala leather handbag, which tops my wish list. But I did pick up a marine blue pullover.

Colors trending this fall:

Classic
During sale season, this frugal shopper looks for a classic piece or two, since they don't go out of style. I'm not interested in a head-to-toe classic look; that's a bit too stuffy-looking for this over 50 gal. Instead, I like to mix classics with trendier pieces to create a little edge. For my recent shopping trip, my wish list included a new blue jean skirt. A jean skirt is a wardrobe staple from March till November on the weekends. I like to style a jean skirt with a textured sweater and/or leather jacket, and with little boots or sandals. I found a jean skirt at Shop Gap.com! for $4.99. I also picked up a knit tunic--another classic.

In any season, there are a few classic pieces that are also on trend. Classics that are trending this fall include: Aran sweaters, long sweaters, man-tailored shirts and suits.

Where I live, the 5th of July is one of the quietest days of the year. Or, perhaps, it just seems that way after a night filled with endless firework explosion. (A hint of pyrotechnic chemicals still lingered in the air when I woke up this morning!) In an hour or two, however, I suspect the roads around the mall and department stores will be jammed with wise shoppers taking advantage of the Fourth of July weekend sales, which kick off the summer clearance sales.

Spending the day bumping into other people's shopping carts and waiting on long checkout lines, doesn't exactly appeal to me, to say the least. I much rather turn on my computer and check out the sales virtually. For those of you who feel the same, I've created links to sales at some of my favorite shopping destinations for women over 50. Most of the 'Fourth of July' sales run through July 7th, so there's still plenty of time to look for bargains. When you shop, either in stores or online, are you frustrated by what you find--or, perhaps, don't find? Are the dresses too short or ill-fitting? Do you wish they had sleeves or a higher or lower neckline? Do you find a skirt you like, but hate its pockets?

What if there was a site where you could choose the length of the sleeves or hem, or design other elements to create a garment that flatters you? Well, there is! The folks a eShakti are committed to providing affordable, custom-made fashion to make women who wear sizes 0-36 look their very best. Recently, the company invited me to customize a garment and share the experience with Flattering50 readers. And be sure to scroll down for eShakti's special offer for Flattering50 readers!

AFFORDABLE STYLES MADE TO FIT
eShakti offers a large selection of dresses, skirts, slacks and tops. Skirts range from $50-$100. Dresses range from $60-$120, but many styles are well under $100. For my review, I chose a trendy wraparound, double-breasted skirt with a diagonally-cut opening.

When shopping for skirts, I have two problems. First, they never fit right. To get a skirt that fits my hips, I have to choose a size that is usually two or three inches too big around the waist. Plus, as a petite woman, I look best when the hem falls just above my knees. I'm no fan of my aging knees, believe me, but a longer hem length makes me look squat. The result is, 9 out of 10 skirts I buy have to go to the tailor for alterations. If the tailor has to alter the waist and hem, it can cost me a pretty penny (especially if the garment is lined).

THE eSHAKTI DIFFERENCE
When ordering at eShakti, a customer is asked to follow three simple steps: choose a size (standard or customized), give her height and, if she likes, customize certain elements. Surprisingly, I was able to choose a standard size, using the eShakti size chart. Next, I gave my height. (Customers are asked to give their height to ensure a "truer" fit.) Lastly, you are asked if you'd like to customizing certain elements. I was able to request that the hem length fall above my knees and that I wanted the pockets removed (I don't need any extra bulk around my hips, thank you). Certain customizing requests, like specifying a hem length or a neckline, cost a flat fee of $7.50. Believe me--that's the merest fraction of what I spend at the tailor for alterations. Removing the pockets was a free customization.

I hope you can see from my photos (above and below) that my new skirt fits like it was made for me--which it was! It's well-made of a sturdy Rayon/Nylon Spandex material. The fabric's stretch makes it super comfortable for walking and sitting. It's a garment that can worn all day and into the evening, and dressed up or down. There's no fussing with the front buttons because the skirt has a side zipper.

My new skirt arrived 13 days after I ordered. The website says the average delivery time is 18 days. This may seem like a long time, but remember: each garment is made to order. eShakti doesn't have warehouses filled with clothes; they don't stock any sizes. By shipping straight to you from the manufacturer, the garment's cost is kept affordable.

Needless to say, I was impressed with my eShakti shopping experience. Before eShakti contacted me, I had been shopping for a new spring skirt. I didn't have anything in particular in mind--just something that looked stylish, fit reasonable well and was affordable. After visiting six or seven stores, spending probably 2-3 hours, I hadn't found a skirt. And even if I had, it probably would have needed altering, which takes at least a week and costs a lot more than $7.50. Next time, I'll stop by eShakti first. If the site has a style I like, I know with customization, I'll have an affordable garment that looks and fits really well on me.

Still Learning: 'Unavailable' Online May Be Only Temporary

If you shop online, you've probably had the experience of finding something you really like, only to discover when you try to purchase it that it isn't available in the size or color you want. In such cases, I have always assumed that "unavailable" meant, well, unavailable. However, a recent shopping experience has taught me that "unavailable" online today may be "available" online tomorrow.

SHOE STORY
This year, my spring wish list included a pair of black sandals. I was looking for: a black leather slingback sandal with a peep toe and a heel under 3". Simple enough, yes? Actually, I couldn't find it in any store. I found sandal after sandal that fit most of the description except the heel was over 3"--too high for me unless I'm sitting down.

Then, after several session at the computer, searching my favorite shoe sites as well as a few new ones, I found a pair of Women's Bella Vita 'Leona' Slingback Sandal, 2 1/4" heel (above) at Shop must-have spring shoes at NORDSTROM.online. I was excited...until I started to place my order. I clicked on the color and the size and a pop-up box appeared, telling me: "combination unavailable."

Disappoint, but not quite discouraged, I went back online, where I found the sandal style at one other site. However, once again, my size and color were not available. After that, I realized I would have to come up with completely different sandal style or settle for the Bella Vita sandal in a different color. I revisited the Nordstrom sandal department, hoping something would grab me. And guess what? The website was now showing the Bela Vita sandals in size and color I needed. I ordered them on the spot.

I don't pretend to be the savviest online shopper around and, perhaps, many of you have had my experience of finding a garment or accessory "unavailable" one day and "available" a few days later. I'm sharing my story in case of any of you find something online you really love, but it's "unavailable." My advice: wait a few days and check back. The item may be available.

2015 Swimsuit: 14 Trends and Where to Shop Online

It's that time again--swimsuit season! Huh? Here in the Northeast, we've been experiencing record snow fall and single digit temperatures. That hasn't stopped the brick and mortar shops in my area, however, from wheeling out their 2015 swimsuit lines. Recently, I took a peek at the trends. I'm happy to report there are a number of new swimsuit designs that are fun and flattering for women over 50. A few of the new designs, like the monokini and high-waist bottoms, might be best left to the under 50 set. But then, two of my "just 50" girlfriends still wear bikinis, so who knows?

To avoid confusion, I've left out the words "for women over 50" in the post's title. In the past, some visitors have been very disappointed when they haven't found women over 50 modeling the swimsuits. I understand completely, but the truth is: Most women I know, regardless of their age, would never pose in a swimsuit for the Internet. Instead, I'm illustrating the trends with photos of young models provided by the swimwear companies. I've assembled a group of swimsuits for women of different body shapes, including different bust sizes. Here goes...

Giveaway Winner Models Her New Flattering Top

Am I the only American who wasn't out shopping this weekend? Probably not, but do wonder sometimes. I'm well aware that I am missing out on huge savings by avoiding the "Black Weekend" sales. On Friday, the New York Times was so thick with store circulars it looked like the Sunday Times. Every year I'm tempted to venture out to the stores, but then visions of crowds and chaos keep me at home, where I wait patiently for Cyber Monday.

I love Cyber Monday. I love shopping and saving on holiday gifts, while enjoying the peace and solitude of my home. Over the weekend, I made up a list of gift ideas for my girlfriends, sisters, and sister-in-laws over 50. This afternoon, I did a little pre-Cyber Monday search of the items to see if they were on sale anywhere. I was pleased to find that many (though not all) of my gift ideas are either priced below $50 or are reduced to under $50 during Cyber Monday sales. EYE-CATCHING JEWELS
Most of the women in my orbit love jewelry and seem to welcome a new bauble at the holidays. Of course, it's important to have a sense of your friend's or female relation's taste in jewelry.

In December, holiday bazaars pop up around New York City and many of the vendors are jewelry designers. If you don't have holiday bazaars in your area, you might want to check out the nicely-priced clip-on earrings at Boyer New York. How’s your swimsuit holding up? Yesterday, I wore a swimsuit to the beach and noticed the elastic is fraying in a couple of places. “Hmm,” I thought, “I won’t be packing this one away for another year at the end of the season.” Last night, I was online and decided to see if I could find any end-of-season swimsuit sales. Ha!–there are lots.

If you know your current swimsuit won’t be usable next year or, perhaps, that you’d like a new one for the cruise to somewhere tropical you’ve planned for this winter, August is a great time to shop. For this post, I’m sharing links to several sites with one-piece suits as well as tankini tops and bottoms with as much as 80% off. The swimsuit styles are available in Regular and Plus sizes as well as a variety of cup sizes. But if you don’t find anything you like on these sites, fear not. Just google “swimwear sale” and you’ll get lots of other links.

SWIMSUIT SALES
“End-of-season” sales are going on at many online department stores and apparel companies right now. Some of these sales include swimsuits. For example, Shopbop has a bunch of trendy swimsuit designs available in its Up to 70% Off Sale. For this post, however, I’m focusing on a few websites that specialize in swimsuits and, consequently, have a greater selection on sale.

That said, I strongly advise you to shop for a new swimsuit when you have time and patience. While you may get lucky and find a suit in your size the first time you click on a style you like, chances are you’ll have to spend a little time hunting. Currently, there’s an enormous selection of swimsuits on sale. However, many styles are only available in a few sizes. Still Learning: Phone App Makes Shoppers More Savvy

We've all heard about goods--such as clothing and beauty products--that are produced under unethical conditions. Some companies, for example, use manufacturing methods that are harmful to workers or to animals or the environment. In addition, some companies use their economic power to influence social change. These companies may be for or against equal pay for women, a woman's right to choose, and gay rights--to name just a few causes.

At times, I’ve been moved to stop buying a product when the media draw attention to what I consider harmful activities conducted by the product's company. The trouble is, the media often focus on a parent company and I will unwittingly continue to buy goods sold by businesses owned by the parent company. Recently, I learned that a free app called Buycott can help raise my awareness about business activities that go against my principles as well as quickly alert me to all the companies controlled by an offending parent company. Since Flattering50 is a style and shopping site, I'm sharing what I've learned about being a more savvy shopper with Buycott.

BOYCOTTING BAD BEHAVIOR
Buycott, which was launched a year ago, allows shoppers to use their phones to scan barcodes. Within seconds, the shopper can trace the product’s company back to the parent company. Did you know, for instance, that Nestlé has a stack in Jenny Craig, L’Oreal, Garnier, Kiehl’s, Maybelline, Poland Springs and hundreds of other companies?

Shoppers can also join user-created campaigns on Buycott to boycott negative business practices as well as support positive activities. Each campaign describes the ethical or non-ethical activity and lists companies known to engaged in the activity. The campaign also provides resources, that is, links to media coverage of the companies and their activities. It's up to the consumer to weigh the evidence before committing to a campaign. After joining a campaign, the barcode scan lets the shopper know whether or not a product is one she should be "avoiding" (see Poland Spring above) or one that poses "no conflicts" (see L'Occitane below).

The campaigns on Buycott run the gamut. Currently, there are campaigns supporting Israel as well as those supporting Palestine. There are campaigns that “support reasonable gun control” as well as ones that “support gun rights and the second amendment.”In other words, there is something for everyone to support or boycott.

To see how it works, I joined 10 campaigns that either violate my principles (ie, child slavery on chocolate plantations and sweatshop labor) or supported what I consider worthy causes (like protecting bees, fair trade practices, and USA-made products). Instantly, I was given a list of companies that either support or violate my principles or do both. Yes, both. Some companies support activities I’m for and against. Ugh! Once again, I’m reminded that few things in the world are ever black and white.

The Buycott app is designed to give consumers instant information as she shops. Since I like to spend as little time as possible in the grocery store, I tested Buycott at home with food and beauty products in my cupboards. My thinking: I would start by scanning the products I regularly buy and learn which ones I should or shouldn't avoid in the future. It was quite an eye-opener.

Yesterday, while shopping at a department store, I scanned several clothing labels. Unfortunately, the companies--DKNY, Ralph Lauren and Jones New York--weren't recognized by the Buycott system. I learned later that the shopper can find some information by typing in the name of a company that doesn't automatically pop up during the barcode scanning. I'll try that next time I'm clothes shopping.

Holiday Heating Up with Summer's Semi-Annual Sales

Happy Fourth of July Weekend! On July 4th, my father-in-law always used to sigh and say, "Ah, well, the dear old summer is over." It always got a laugh from the family. For me, July 4th always feels like the start of the summer, especially the beach season. This weekend, the family is gathering at the beach house and I'm looking forward to several days of barbecuing and sailing and probably a few fireworks. Since I'm usually the first one to rise in the morning, I also intend to go online and take advantage of some of the super Fourth of July sales. Traditionally, this weekend kicks off semi-annual sales. Clothing companies are anxious to unload their spring/summer inventory to make room for the fall fashions. Take for instance, the Madden Girl Gloriee from Shiekh Shoes (above). Right now, the patriotic pair of sneakers is 35% off (was $39.99, now $29.99). A 35% off sale is very nice, but I'm seeing lots of clothing and accessory sites with up to 70% off the next few days.

FILLING IN THE SUMMER WARDROBE
I rarely buy summer fashions during the spring months. In fact, if possible, I like to hold off till July 4th weekend to fill in my summer wardrobe. I know I'll get a lot more for my clothing allowance if I wait till now.

This weekend, I'll be checking out the sales at my favorite department stores--Nordstrom's, Macy's and Lord and Taylor. I'll also be visiting the online sites of small clothing companies that are known for nicely made, moderate priced clothing. Here's a work outfit I wore earlier this week in celebration of Independence Day. The outfit comprises of garments from three of my favorite clothing companies--Ann Taylor (the skirt), The Loft (the V-neck sweater) and Banana Republic (the white tank).

3 FAVORITE SITES AND CURRENT SALES
Ann Taylor ~ I've been shopping AT since high school. However, a haven't always been loyal. A few of the clothing line's reinventions over the past 20 years haven't appealed to me. A year ago, however, an over 50 girlfriend encouraged me to try AT again. Since then, I've found several well-made, unique skirts and sweaters there. Take a peek at AT's semi-annual sale at...

Banana Republic ~ I have always had great shopping luck with BR, in terms of finding clothing that is well-made, well-priced and that fits well, especially sale styles. I've bought tops, sweaters and dresses by the company. My favorite: the dresses. However...the BR dresses tend to be short. They work for me because I'm petite. Women over 50 who need a longer dress length might do better at Shop Jones New York. I do recommend you take a peek at the BR tops and sweaters, though, especially now while the company is offer 40% off your purchase. Click on the BR logo below to learn more about the current sale.

Many, many years ago, my husband (yes, my husband!) introduced me to Calvin Klein underwear.
