Editor’s Note: I was recently asked me to review a new product, James and Lourdes Moisturizing Gloves. The following is my review.

Health and beauty experts tell women over 50 to moisturize year round. And sure, I’m devoted to daily facial moisturizing—even in summertime. My hands, however, are another story. Sadly, I tend to ignore my hands until they start to burn and itch. My problem: I never think to moisturize my hands when there's time for the hand lotion to be absorbed. Granted, tacky hands isn't a huge problem. However, it's been enough to squash anything close to daily hand moisturizing routine.

Over the summer, the folks at James and Lourdes contacted me with a possible solution: gloves that allow hand moisturizing anywhere, anytime. Unlike spa gloves, they told me, James and Lourdes moisturizing gloves are made from microfiber polyester yarn with a bit of stretch for use indoor or outdoor. The James and Lourdes folks suggested that summertime was the perfect time to start moisturizing, before the onset of cold weather. I liked the idea of being proactive and agreed to try the gloves.

A COMFORTABLE, CONVENIENT WAY TO MOISTURIZE
The James and Lourdes moisturizing gloves are available in 3-finger and 5-finger styles as well as three sizes. I thought the 3-finger style, which leaves the tips of the thumb and pointer finger uncovered, sounded ideal, since most things in my world—cell phones, appliances, and car, to name a few—are operated with a push of a button by my pointer finger.

It was super easy to start using the gloves. I simply applied my own hand moisturizer and slipped on the gloves. I'm happy to report I've been using the moisturizing gloves faithfully while reading before bedtime for over a month. The gloves are comfortable and slip on/off easily. When it's time to clean them, I just toss them into the washing machine (the dryer isn't recommended). I've been a faithful hand moisturizer even when traveling, which I've done a lot in the past two months. The gloves come with a handy travel pouch. I also love knowing that if I forget my nighttime moisturizing routine, I can always moisturize the next day, while reading the paper or driving the car. The gloves' fabric and construction are durable and comfortable for any number of activities. I like having options!

The best part, though, is the difference the moisturizing gloves have made on my hands! After only a week's use, my hands felt softer and smoother. (It was quite clear that my hands, while better off than they are in winter, were quite rough and dry in August, despite the humidity.) For the first time ever, I’m not dreading winter's attack on my hands. Since my hands are well-moisturized now and they should stay moisturized—thanks to the moisturizing gloves—I’m confident they won't suffer from dry skin the way they have in the past. If like me, you've had trouble establishing a hand-moisturizing routine, I highly recommend these gloves. The gloves can be purchased online for $9.35 ($16.40 for two pairs). And be sure to start using them right away—before the first frost.

Editor's Note: Flattering50 was recently invited to review Wrapurse, a new product that protects the bottom of a woman's handbag. The following is that review.

How many times have you hesitated to put your good handbag down somewhere--a public floor or a park bench, for instance? Too many times to count? Since I was first contacted by the folks at WraPurse, I've been amazed how many times I found myself saying: "Do you really want to put your purse there?" In just the past week, I've avoided putting my handbag on a public bathroom floor, when the stall had no hook; a movie theater floor, sticky with soda and popcorn butter; and the stadium floor at a summer concert. In the past, my only solution in those situation was to keep the purse in my lap or on my shoulder--not great options. With WraPurse, a convenient, protective covering for the bottom of a handbag (see photo above), I can put a purse on most surfaces without fear of ruining it.

Right now, WraPurse creator Cyndi Heap is running a campaign to generate funding so she can establish her product's brand as well as give back to a worthy cause.
INCREASE YOUR HANDBAG'S LONGEVITY
Cyndi Heap, the mother of two active boys, got the idea for WraPurse after ruining good handbags on soccer fields and dirty sports bleachers. The WraPurse, which is reusable, slides over the bottom of a handbag or tote and is secured with a drawstring. It comes in different sizes for a secure fit on most handbags and is available in three colors--chestnut, merlot and midnight black.

I only have a few really expensive handbags, but one is Gucci and its white. The purse is not new, but is in pretty good condition. The reason: Over the years, I've been very careful about where I take and where I put it down. I'm excited about WraPurse because it gives me peace of mind when I'm out and about with a handbag, especially an expensive one.

Using the site's size chart, I ordered a medium size WraPurse in chestnut brown (below). Most of my handbags are medium size, so I chose a WraPurse size I could use with all of them.

Wrapurse is designed to be used again and again. However, because it's made with a water-resistant material, it shouldn't be machine washed or even hand washed. After using my WraPurse, I wiped it down with a clean rag. Once dried, I returned it to its travel pouch.

The product is lightweight and compact, so it's no trouble to carry it in a handbag. It's also reasonable priced ($16-22, depending on the size) and can be purchased online at WraPurse.
CAMPAIGN PLANS TO GIVE BACK
What's better than giving back? Cyndi is currently running an Indiegogo campaign for WraPurse. Indiegogo is a website that helps people raise funds for creative, independent projects. You can become a backer of Cyndi's campaign by pledging money or simply posting the project's link online and on social media. In addition to using the funds to establish the WraPurse brand, Cyndi is planning to give a portion to charity. Cyndi, who has a son with special needs, plans to donate 10% of the funds raised to Understood.org, one of the programs at the National Center for Learning Disabilities.

I finally stopped by China: Through the Looking Glass, this summer’s Costume Institute exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The exhibit explores Chinese culture’s influence on fashions—in the East and in the West—over the centuries. Over 140 garments, many created by well-known designers like Yves Saint Laurent and Marc Jacobs, are displayed in rooms on three floors. To emphasize the connection between culture and fashion, the garments are juxtaposed with Chinese paintings, films, porcelains and other objects. Don't you love the influence of Chinese porcelain on the garments above and below?

Although photography is allowed in the exhibition, the room lighting is often dimmed for dramatic effect. Nevertheless, I took a few snapshots to share with readers who may not be able to attend this wonderful exhibit.

ROMANCING THE EAST
The exhibition’s clothing spans five centuries, from the 16th century to now. However, exhibit’s curators emphasize that it isn’t meant to be a history lesson. There is, for example, a noticeable absence of traditional Chinese footwear, such as the Lotus shoes worn by women with bound feet. Instead, with few exceptions, the exhibit is a highly romantic, fanciful look at the impact of the Chinese aesthetic on fashion.

I’ve always been enchanted with traditional Chinese fashions—the silk fabric, the intricate embroidery and quilting, the sleek silhouettes, the Mandarin collar, and the use of red (a favorite color) and other bright colors. Here are a few examples...

I'm happy to report that Astrid and Vicki are the winners of the recent Flattering50 Giveaway of Designer Nails: Create Art at Your Fingertips, a new book by nail artist Ami Vega. This new book, filled with gorgeous photographs of nail art by Jason Setiawan (like the photo above), tips and resources, and lots of encouragement from Ami, recently inspired me to dip my toe, or rather fingernails, in nail art.

TIPS FOR BEGINNING NAIL ARTISTS
Following Ami’s suggestion, I ran out to a craft store and bought a set of very fine paint brushes. Next, I flipped through Ami's new book and settled on the Blue Moon design (p. 62) for my first attempt at nail art. It seemed less complicated than many of the other designs. For the polish, I chose a light blue for the base and then applied a navy blue for the half-moon of color at the nail base and for the stripe across the top of the nail. With the paint brush in my left-hand (I’m left-handed), I went to work on my right hand's nails. Was I successful? I would say 'marginally' (see photo below). That is, the results were neither great nor awful (though pretty close to awful). However, I went ahead and polished my right hand. My thinking: If my right hand came out better, I would redo my left hand.

Things got much worse, however, when I painted my left hand’s nails. There is very little I can do well with my right hand and nail polishing turned out to be particularly challenging. However, Ami warns readers that nail art may take practice, so I persevered.

For my next nail art attempt, I invented my own design, something that didn't require straight or uniform lines or mirrored shapes--in other words, something I thought I could handle. I chose a bright green and pale blue nail polishes. This attempt came out better on both right and left hand finger nails. However, it was far from perfect and the mistakes were rather glaring because of the contrast between the bright green and pale blue colors.

After a little nail reflection, I came to the conclusion that beginner nail artists, like me, should:

Beware of geometric designs. Drawing straight lines or repeating shapes takes practice, practice and practice!

Stick with organic designs and shapes—that is, designs or shapes that don't repeat or don't have look uniform.

Use subtle color combinations. Mistakes are much more noticeable with contrasting colors.

Be patient and don't expect perfection right away. Even if my suggestions help, nail art is something that takes time to master. It's best to enjoy the process and appreciate each time you improve a little.

For my most recent attempt, I used my own design again. However, this time, I used a pale blue base and a design in a pale green. The two pale colors blended well, creating a very subtle design. The look is still pretty wobbly, but I'll keep practicing.

Designer Nails provides directions for creating about 50 different nail art designs. Many of the designs look like they need some serious practice to perfect. However, others don't require you to draw straight lines or mirrored shapes, thus, making them a little easier to recreate.

Happy Polishing!
Fall 2015 fashions are now on to the shelves and webpages of most clothing brands and department stores. It’s time to make that wish list of clothing and accessories to complete your fall look. Regardless of whether I’ll be shopping for a new textured sweater, cropped pants or new boots this fall, I'll be looking for fashions that offer two things: Style and Comfort. That’s why I’m thrilled to announce that the folks at NIC+ZOE would like to give one lucky Flattering50 reader a $150 gift certificate to the clothing brand’s online site. The Boston-based fashion brand specializes in comfortable, feminine knitwear for travel and life. For nearly a decade, NIC + ZOE, which is named for Chief Creative Officer Dorian Lightbown’s two children—Nicholas and Zoë—has offered women modern knitwear designs. The designs emphasize quality, function and style, making the pieces well-suited for work or play. I love the clothing line’s textured styles, sophisticated patterns, comfortable tailoring, and warm colors and neutrals—perfect for fall.

“Cute skirt,” said the women at the office.

“That’s no skirt,” I replied, smiling. “That’s a sundress.”

Yes, I’m over 50 and still wearing strappy sundresses. However, I’m not wearing them solo. Instead, I’m repurposing my sundresses by creating faux skirt looks with lightweight sweaters and accessories.

SUNDRESS AS FAUX SKIRT
Repurposing my sundresses satisfies the frugal fashionista in me, who hates to stop wearing a garment that is in good condition and still fits. Also, layering a sundress with a sweater offers warmth in the office, where the air conditioning is always blasting, as well as on cooler days in August and early September. Finally, mixing up sweaters and accessories with sundresses offers a variety of outfits, which I always appreciate.

Instead of giving a Gap - Women's Clothes sundress the heave-ho, I’m pairing it with different sweaters and scarves. Recently, I chose a trendy mint green pullover (above). I’ve also paired it with a beige cable sweater and a turquoise scarf (below).

When I'm heading out for a casual dinner on the waterfront, I'll pair the same dress with a lightweight navy cardigan and a jean jacket.

Here’s what I did with a black and white sundress a while back. The hot pink sweater offers a pop of color.

Editor's Note: This Giveaway has now ended. Thanks to all those Flattering50 readers who entered!

In recent years, I've become a huge fan of polishing my nails. It's one of those things I find I have more time for now that I'm an empty nester. For a very small investment, I can change my nail polish with my mood; it's a great pick-me-up. Lately, I've been experimenting with colors I never imagined I'd like: green, powder blue, lavender, navy. So...when the folks representing the nail artist Ami Vega contacted me about Ms. Vega's new book, Designer Nails: Create Art at Your Fingertips, I was thrilled. Ami, the creator of El Salonisto, a nail art business and blog (elsalonsito.com), has compiled a beautifully photographed, easy-to-follow book on creating nail art for everyone--from beginners, like me, to experts. The folks promoting the book (Perigee Trade), which was released August 4th, would like to give two lucky Flattering50 readers a copy of this gorgeous book.

INSPIRATION FOR YOUR 'INNER ARTIST'
Ami Vega has worked with major beauty companies, such as Revlon, Essie, and Maybelline, and has a monthly column in the British magazine Scratch. She has contributed her nail designs to fashion shoots as well as worked with designers like Donna Karan and Monika Chiang. "Nails are like tiny canvases to me," Ms. Vega writes in her new book's introduction. She hopes her book will inspire and encourage readers' "inner artist." The book's designs are an "open platform for your own self-expression."

I received a copy of the book a few days ago and I'm loving it! It includes how-to's on everything you need to know to create dramatic nail art, including tips on proper care for healthy nails, correct nail preparation, maintaining your polished nails, and step-by-step directions on 50 really cool nail designs. The tone of the book is very encouraging for novices like me. While I'll need to work my way up--with lots of practice--to some of the intricate designs, the collection includes less complicated designs to get started. When ready, Ms. Vega writes, "move to the more intricate patterns without fear; after all, there's no right or wrong when it comes to nail art. (Look for my nail art creations in future posts.)

Recently, the folks at 10DollarMail contacted me and invited me to experience their website, which specializes in low-cost apparel, shoes, jewelry and accessories for women. In fact, everything on the site is priced at $9.99 or less. I was intrigued and wondered: Is it possible to get good quality fashions at such a low price? After a perusal of the site's merchandise, which includes Plus sizes, I accepted the invitation to review the shopping site.

To experience the website, I order the Woven Straw Camel Bohemian Shoulder Bag, using a $9.99 gift certificate provided by 10DollarMail. In the summertime, I like to carry a straw bag on the weekends; straw is a casual and fun look. Plus, a big straw bag is handy for shopping,
especially at the farms on Long Island's North Fork. To test out the 10DollarMail straw bag, I carried it on a recent trip to Lavender by the Sea, a lavender farm in East Marion (see photos).

A LOW-COST BAG THAT HOLDS UP
I'm constantly encouraging Flattering50 readers to avoid buying lots and lots of low-cost garments and accessories, and instead, spending a little more on a few more expensive, better-quality pieces. However, I also believe the over 50 woman can stretch her fashion budget by mixing in a low-cost item of good quality when styling an outfit. The key, of course, is the quality of the low-cost item.

According to its website, 10DollarMail is able to offer good quality, low-cost apparel and accessories because of its unique business model, which allows the site to purchase limited quantities of overstock inventory at heavily discounted prices. By cutting out wholesalers and distributors, the site says it can pass on great deals to customers. However, the proof, as they say, is in the pudding. I couldn't wait to see what the straw bag I ordered actually looked like up close.

My initial reaction after removing the straw bag from the shipping material was amazement. I was honestly amazed by the low-cost bag's quality. It is fully lined and has a small pocket (perfect for holding my cell phone) and a magnetic closure. Still, I wondered: How would it hold up when used?

Yesterday, I used my new straw bag on a trip to the lavender farm. It's impossible to visit the farm without stocking up on its many lavender-based products for myself and for gifts. I'm happy to report that the straw bag held up beautifully under the weight of jars of honey, soaps, and tins of hand balm.

Unfortunately, I can't share the link to my straw bag. It's no longer available. Again, the site keeps prices low by offering limited quantities and continually adding new merchandise. I also can't speak to the quality of all the apparel and accessories on the site. However, I am very pleased with my straw bag. In fact, I'm planning to buy the Tiny Leaves Pajama Bottoms for $9.99 next.

Naturally, quality is super important when shopping. However, a shopping site's functionality is also very important to me. The 10DollarMail site is very responsive, making it quick and easy to look through the collection. Plus, when ordering, the site accepts PayPal as well as major credit cards. And the ordering process is handled on secure webpages. For all these reason, I believe 10DollarMail is a site worth checking out.

Editor's note: The winner of the most recent Flattering50 Giveaway is Lori. Lori won a Blu-ray of "Woman In Gold" and a $50 Visa Gift Certificate. Congratulations, Lori! The next Flattering50 Giveaway should be launching in early August 2015.

The semi-annual sales or summer clearance sales may be almost over, but there are still bargains to be found. I wasn't able to shop the sales till this past week and was pleased to find there are still a lot on sale in stores and online. Needless the sale, shopping at the end of the sales season has its advantages and disadvantages. The Disadvantage: You may not find a lot of things in your size. The Advantage: The clothing companies really want to unload their inventory and keep slashing prices. For example, this week, I bought a jean skirt and textured sweater at Gap for less than $20.

As a frugal shopper, I like to have a strategy when shopping the semi-annual or clearance sales. Without a plan, it's easy to be overwhelmed by the racks and racks of garments at reduced prices. While I may find a little something to wear right now (a midsummer pick-me-up), my real goal when shopping the summer sales is to get a head start on fall shopping. To shop for fall pieces now, I follow the 3 C's. That is I look for garments and accessories that are:
Chic
Color trendy
Classic

SHOPPING WITH A PURPOSE
Right now, you'll find sales at most of the major clothing brands and department stores. (For links to current sales, take a peek HERE.) While the sales may cool down after that, they'll be back again over Labor Day Weekend and Columbus Day Weekend. Here's what I look for when shopping...

Chic
To shop the summer sales for clothing and accessories I'll wear in the fall, I like to know what the fall trends are going to be--what will be chic or trending. Since the telephone book-size September issues of the fashion magazines aren't out in July, I look for fall preview articles on online and at the newsstand. Obviously, not all the trends are going to suit my taste and comfort level. Also, most of the trends are for cold weather clothing (ie, fur trim), which, obviously, aren't on sale or even available yet. However, I like to have a few summer-to-fall transition pieces in mind when I shop. For my recent shopping trip, my wish list included textured garments and dark floral prints. I found a texture sweater that I know will be a staple this fall.

Other fall 2015 trends:

Nouveau Victorian (ie, high collars, lace blouses, ruffles)

Separates with a mix of prints (ie, stripes and plaids)

70s Bohemian (leftover from last year)

Unexpected color combinations

Fur trim

21st Century Mod

Tops and bottoms in the same color scheme

Color-trendy
For every season, there are a handful of hip colors. Beginning last spring, however, color--lots of color--has dominated the style consciousness. The same is predicted for this fall. Since turning 50, I have become color-challenged, relying heavily on neutral and muted hues. (I wrote a post about my desire to break away from a reliance on neutral.) For my recent shopping trip, I looked for pieces in fall's trendy colors. I didn't find a Marsala leather handbag, which tops my wish list. But I did pick up a marine blue pullover.

Colors trending this fall:
Marine blue * Marsala red * Brown * Taupe * Mustard * Cobalt * Navy * Crimson * Marsala *Powder Blue * Deep purple * Lavender * Bottle green * Forest green * Blush *

Classic
During sale season, this frugal shopper looks for a classic piece or two, since they don't go out of style. I'm not interested in a head-to-toe classic look; that's a bit too stuffy-looking for this over 50 gal. Instead, I like to mix classics with trendier pieces to create a little edge. For my recent shopping trip, my wish list included a new blue jean skirt. A jean skirt is a wardrobe staple from March till November on the weekends. I like to style a jean skirt with a textured sweater and/or leather jacket, and with little boots or sandals. I found a jean skirt at Shop Gap.com! for $4.99. I also picked up a knit tunic--another classic.

In any season, there are a few classic pieces that are also on trend. Classics that are trending this fall include: Aran sweaters, long sweaters, man-tailored shirts and suits.

And if you're shopping the sales, be sure to check out... Top July Sales: Big Savings on Women's Clothing
Here's a collection of dresses with sleeves for women over 50 of different sizes, shapes and personal styles. Don't be alarmed by some of the dress lengths. It may just mean that the young model is very tall. I tried to include only dresses that are 36" long or longer. Unfortunately, the descriptions don't always give the dress length, so you'll have to check with the clothing company.

Click on any of the photos if you’d like more information about the dress…

If you’re a follower of the fashion scene, you probably read that Donna Karan (above) stepped down as chief designer of her brand last week. LVMH, which has owned the label since 2001, has "suspended" the Donna Karan brand, according to the New York Times. Ms. Karan's other lines, DKI and DKNY, will continue to operate.

Ms. Karan held her first show in 1985. Fashion was a bit rocky in the 80s and early 90s. Whenever I look at old photos of girlfriends and female family members from back then, I inevitably cringe at the big hairdos, the big shoulders and, in general, ill-fitting clothes. In my humble opinion, it was the worst period for fashion in my lifetime.

Part of the problem with fashions in the 80s, I think, stemmed from the increasing numbers of women doing jobs that had been done by men in the past. No one seemed to know how to dress the working woman. I remember wearing boxy navy or grey pinstriped skirt-suits and sensible pumps to work. Cringe. (A girlfriend was told by her employer that she couldn’t wear sling-back pumps because they were "sandals.") Donna Karan designs were a breath of fresh air for women because they made them look and feel feminine and powerful during the day or night. (Scroll down to see Oprah's friend Gayle King in a luscious red Donna Karan gown.) Thank you, Ms. Karan!

Throughout her career, Ms. Karan has been a role model for women of our generation. I’m looking forward to see what she does next. She has been quoted as saying, “If I weren't doing what I'm doing today... I'd be traveling around the world on the back of a motorcycle.” Maybe she will.

For this post, I’m sharing my top 10 favorite quotes (so far) by the designer.

MS. KARAN SAYS…

Accent your positive and delete your negative.

Evening is a time of real experimentation. You never want to look the same way.

Design is a constant challenge to balance comfort with luxe, the practical with the desirable.

Age and size are only numbers. It's the attitude you bring to clothes that make the difference.

I feel very strongly about dresses on every level - a dress feels like underpinning.

I live for what I haven't done.
We've come a long way. Power dressing now is designed to let the woman inside us come through.
Design and style should work toward making you look good and feel good without a lot of effort so you can get on with the things that matter.

In “Woman in Gold,” Academy Award winner Helen Mirren, 69, portrays Maria Altmann, a proud Austrian Jewish woman who fled the Nazis during World War II and relocated to California. Upon the death of her sister, Maria takes on a legal battle, with the help from an inexperienced lawyer (Ryan Reynolds), to regain possession of Gustav Klimt’s “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I,” an artwork that was stolen from her family by the Nazis. The painting’s subject, Adele, was Maria’s aunt. Ms. Mirren gives a fabulous performance of a strong older woman who wishes to reclaim her heritage and seek justice.

Where I live, the 5th of July is one of the quietest days of the year. Or, perhaps, it just seems that way after a night filled with endless firework explosion. (A hint of pyrotechnic chemicals still lingered in the air when I woke up this morning!) In an hour or two, however, I suspect the roads around the mall and department stores will be jammed with wise shoppers taking advantage of the Fourth of July weekend sales, which kick off the summer clearance sales.

Spending the day bumping into other people's shopping carts and waiting on long checkout lines, doesn't exactly appeal to me, to say the least. I much rather turn on my computer and check out the sales virtually. For those of you who feel the same, I've created links to sales at some of my favorite shopping destinations for women over 50. Most of the 'Fourth of July' sales run through July 7th, so there's still plenty of time to look for bargains. Some sales, though, like the 40% sale (above) at Clarks runs straight through till the end of the month. I'll keep updating this post and new sales are advertised. Happy shopping!

I'm constantly receiving sales alerts from Flattering50's sponsors. It seems there's a sale going on somewhere 365 days of the year. Who knew! Here are links to online sites, most of which I have had happy shopping experiences with. Some of my favorites: Zappos, Nordstroms, Covered Perfectly, and Lord + Taylor. It's not a complete list of recommended shopping destinations for women over 50. But it will get you started. Happy Shopping!

In recent years, the overarching fashion trend has been to ignore safe styling and look for opportunities to add a bit of edge. Women—yes, even women over 50—have been encouraged to “mix things up”—different textures, different prints, different attitudes. This summer, we’re being challenged to shake up the way we use color.

COLOR-CONSCIOUS STYLING
The notion of using colors in new ways appeals to me. I love “refreshing” what’s already in my closet as opposed to adding a lot of new stuff. (This year, when friends asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I said, “Come to my house and take something, anything—that’s what I want.”)

So…I’ve decided to see how many color-conscious outfits I can style this summer. I know I can’t shelve the neutrals—especially the accessories—completely. But I'm going to try to keep my go-to neutrals--black, white, beige or grey--from taking over the outfit. That’s my color quest for summer 2015.

To kick off this color quest, I wore a baby blue top with a lime tulip skirt yesterday. I'm not a big fan of matching shoes and handbag (more my mom's style), so I paired my orange handbag with blue shoes.

Happy 4th of July!

I recently added a new draped dress to my spring wardrobe (photo, above). I'm a big fan of draped dresses for women over 50, so I was drawn to this dress, a Lauren By Ralph Lauren design. Upon closer inspection, though, I realized this dress embodies just about everything I look for in a new dress. Naturally, I grabbed it.

How do I measure the value of a dress? Let me share the 9 ways. I look for...

#1: Feminine Styling
These days, I'm finding style inspiration in what Dame Helen Mirren, 69, is wearing. Her style tends to be very feminine, if not downright sexy. I’ve always encouraged feminine style after 50. But each of us must decide: How much “sexy” is just right? My new dress is feminine, showing my curves, but it isn’t too revealing (no spaghetti straps, plunging necklines or cutouts). That balance of feminine and reserve is the right amount of sexy for me.

#2: Draping
I love draping--whether it's around the neck, waist, stomach or hips--because it conceals and distracts. My new dress is draped across the stomach, an area I always want to downplay!

#3: A Splashy Print
In general, I love prints. Like draping, prints conceal and distract. While floral prints are popular this spring (Diane Von Furstenberg, 68, wore a floral DVF gown to the Met Gala 2015 last week and looked smashing!), I pick flowery dresses carefully. My new dress has a trendy blurred floral print, which is colorful, but is neither demure nor dainty. Perfect!

# 4: A Comfortable Fabric
There are lots of comfortable fabrics out there, but right now I'm loving the ones with a little stretch. I love the way they give when I walk or sit.

#5: Lining
Like draping and a print, lining conceals those little lumps and bumps. Lining also increases the garment's weight, making it more sturdy and helping it hold its shape. I love the soft jersey linings, which also have a little stretch.

#6: Quality
Okay, I hate style rules. The reason: There isn't a style rule that women can't break and look fabulous doing so. That said, women over 50 are rarely flattered by cheap clothes. Cheap is cheap after 50. That doesn't mean, however, that you have to go into debt to buy well-made clothes. Thanks to the "labels for less" type sites, T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, Nordstrom's Rack and so on, as well as the millions of designer outlet sites, it's possible to find quality clothes with a reasonable price tag. Also, these days, huge, semii-annual-type sales happen almost monthly.

#7: Flattering Style
Even if a dress isn't loaded with lots of "plus"(ie, comfort, a jazzy print, lining and so forth), it still might be a good buy, if the dress flatters your body shape. The converse may not be true, though. A really well-made dress doesn't mean much if the design doesn't flatter you. There are tons of articles online to help you determine what designs flatter your shape.

#8 Good Length
Readers often tell me they can't find dresses with long hemlines. Those of us who are petite usually have the opposite problem--we can't find dresses that are short enough. Three things to keep in mind:

1) The models wearing the dress online are often 5' 10" or taller. Unless you're a really tall gal, the dress is going to be longer on you. Always check the dress's description for hem length.

2) If you're a tall woman, there plenty of sites with dress hemmed proportionately for women of height.

3) And, finally, petite women over 50 shouldn't allow themselves to be bullied into wearing dresses hemmed at or below the knee. Apparently, there's a rule floating around about hems and women after 50. I'm a petite and a hem that covers my knees makes me look shorter and stockier. Ugh.

#9: Reasonable Price Tag
I was thrilled to find a draped dress that was well made and flattered my shape. However, it would have gone back on the hanger if the price had exceeded my budget. I will push my budget a little at times, but if a dress costs too much, it loses its charm. Fortunately, this dress was nicely priced, making the perfect dress to wear to Mother's Day lunch with my husband and boys.

Have I left anything out? Leave a comment to let me know. Thanks! And...

Happy Mother's Day!
When you shop, either in stores or online, are you frustrated by what you find--or, perhaps, don't find? Are the dresses too short or ill-fitting? Do you wish they had sleeves or a higher or lower neckline? Do you find a skirt you like, but hate its pockets?

What if there was a site where you could choose the length of the sleeves or hem, or design other elements to create a garment that flatters you? Well, there is! The folks a eShakti are committed to providing affordable, custom-made fashion to make women who wear sizes 0-36 look their very best. Recently, the company invited me to customize a garment and share the experience with Flattering50 readers. And be sure to scroll down for eShakti's special offer for Flattering50 readers!

AFFORDABLE STYLES MADE TO FIT
eShakti offers a large selection of dresses, skirts, slacks and tops. Skirts range from $50-$100. Dresses range from $60-$120, but many styles are well under $100. For my review, I chose a trendy wraparound, double-breasted skirt with a diagonally-cut opening.

When shopping for skirts, I have two problems. First, they never fit right. To get a skirt that fits my hips, I have to choose a size that is usually two or three inches too big around the waist. Plus, as a petite woman, I look best when the hem falls just above my knees. I'm no fan of my aging knees, believe me, but a longer hem length makes me look squat. The result is, 9 out of 10 skirts I buy have to go to the tailor for alterations. If the tailor has to alter the waist and hem, it can cost me a pretty penny (especially if the garment is lined).

THE eSHAKTI DIFFERENCE
When ordering at eShakti, a customer is asked to follow three simple steps: choose a size (standard or customized), give her height and, if she likes, customize certain elements. Surprisingly, I was able to choose a standard size, using the eShakti size chart. Next, I gave my height. (Customers are asked to give their height to ensure a "truer" fit.) Lastly, you are asked if you'd like to customizing certain elements. I was able to request that the hem length fall above my knees and that I wanted the pockets removed (I don't need any extra bulk around my hips, thank you). Certain customizing requests, like specifying a hem length or a neckline, cost a flat fee of $7.50. Believe me--that's the merest fraction of what I spend at the tailor for alterations. Removing the pockets was a free customization.

I hope you can see from my photos (above and below) that my new skirt fits like it was made for me--which it was! It's well-made of a sturdy Rayon/Nylon Spandex material. The fabric's stretch makes it super comfortable for walking and sitting. It's a garment that can worn all day and into the evening, and dressed up or down. There's no fussing with the front buttons because the skirt has a side zipper.

My new skirt arrived 13 days after I ordered. The website says the average delivery time is 18 days. This may seem like a long time, but remember: each garment is made to order. eShakti doesn't have warehouses filled with clothes; they don't stock any sizes. By shipping straight to you from the manufacturer, the garment's cost is kept affordable.

Needless to say, I was impressed with my eShakti shopping experience. Before eShakti contacted me, I had been shopping for a new spring skirt. I didn't have anything in particular in mind--just something that looked stylish, fit reasonable well and was affordable. After visiting six or seven stores, spending probably 2-3 hours, I hadn't found a skirt. And even if I had, it probably would have needed altering, which takes at least a week and costs a lot more than $7.50. Next time, I'll stop by eShakti first. If the site has a style I like, I know with customization, I'll have an affordable garment that looks and fits really well on me.
If you shop online, you've probably had the experience of finding something you really like, only to discover when you try to purchase it that it isn't available in the size or color you want. In such cases, I have always assumed that "unavailable" meant, well, unavailable. However, a recent shopping experience has taught me that "unavailable" online today may be "available" online tomorrow.

SHOE STORY
This year, my spring wish list included a pair of black sandals. I was looking for: a black leather slingback sandal with a peep toe and a heel under 3". Simple enough, yes? Actually, I couldn't find it in any store. I found sandal after sandal that fit most of the description except the heel was over 3"--too high for me unless I'm sitting down.

Then, after several session at the computer, searching my favorite shoe sites as well as a few new ones, I found a pair of Women's Bella Vita 'Leona' Slingback Sandal, 2 1/4" heel (above) at Shop must-have spring shoes at NORDSTROM.online. I was excited...until I started to place my order. I clicked on the color and the size and a pop-up box appeared, telling me: "combination unavailable."

Disappoint, but not quite discouraged, I went back online, where I found the sandal style at one other site. However, once again, my size and color were not available. After that, I realized I would have to come up with completely different sandal style or settle for the Bella Vita sandal in a different color. I revisited the Nordstrom sandal department, hoping something would grab me. And guess what? The website was now showing the Bela Vita sandals in size and color I needed. I ordered them on the spot.

I don't pretend to be the savviest online shopper around and, perhaps, many of you have had my experience of finding a garment or accessory "unavailable" one day and "available" a few days later. I'm sharing my story in case of any of you find something online you really love, but it's "unavailable." My advice: wait a few days and check back. The item may be available.

Happy Shopping!
